Park Facts:
The first land reputedly sold for public burial in Butler County is preserved at the Indian Creek Pioneer Church and Burial Ground found at 3000 Indian Creek Road northwest of the village of Reily in Reily Township. The historic cemetery, dating back to 1810, includes the gravesites of some of the area's earliest settlers, including Daniel Boone's cousin Thomas and members of his family, and Pliny Barnum, relative of early showman P.T. Barnum. The 1829 brick meeting house is the centerpiece of this 3-acre wooded site, donated to the park district in 1960, and restored through the cooperative efforts of the Indian Creek Church restoration committee. The committee hosts an annual Salute to the Pioneers each spring and assists with improvement and maintenance projects at the site. Recently the committee raised much of the funding required to restore the many headstones and monuments in the cemetery. The Indian Creek Pioneer Church and Burial Ground is a favorite place for history enthusiasts and outdoor photography buffs.
Hours:
Open daily from mid-April to mid-October from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the grounds open daily and the church building by appointment.
